The line between camping
and living.

Power and comms don't feed you. Water and food are the base of the pyramid — get them wrong and nothing else matters. This is the pillar that turns a nice setup into genuine self-reliance.

You can survive a long time without a full battery bank. You cannot survive long without clean water, and you cannot stay strong without real food. Every serious off-grid plan solves these first — not with a bug-out fantasy, but with boring, reliable systems that work every single day.

Three deep guides sit under this pillar. Each is built the same way: what actually matters, what the marketing gets wrong, and the specific decisions worth making.

The order of operations

If you're starting from zero, build in this order. Each layer makes the next one worth having.

  1. Water first. Two treatment methods that fail differently, plus storage. Cheapest, fastest, highest consequence.
  2. Safety second. A CO alarm, a fire extinguisher, and a real trauma kit cost under a few hundred dollars combined and cover the failures most likely to actually hurt you.
  3. Food third. Start with a month of shelf-stable staples you already eat. Expand to mylar-packed bulk once the habit is real.
  4. Power fourth. It powers everything above — but a full battery bank with no clean water is a very expensive way to be thirsty. Size it here.
  5. Comms fifth. Starting with the emergency layer, because calling for help outranks streaming.
Most people build this stack exactly backwards — they buy the solar array first because it's the fun part, then discover the boring parts are the ones that decide whether the setup actually works.

What "survival" means here

Not bunkers and camouflage. Self-reliance is the ability to keep your water clean, your food secure, your power on and your people safe without asking anyone's permission. It's a set of systems that work on a normal Tuesday and keep working when a normal Tuesday goes wrong.

Everything published under this pillar gets the same treatment as the power content: check it against the standards and the published guidance, cross-reference what people actually report, and say plainly where the risk is instead of selling around it.
