A multimeter is cheap and it's the difference between diagnosing a problem and guessing at it. Four measurements cover most of what you'll need.
1. DC voltage — the basic health check. Across the battery terminals. Tells you whether something is badly wrong, whether your charger is actually charging, and whether a circuit is live before you touch it.
2. Voltage drop — the hidden killer. Measure at the battery, then at the appliance while it's running under load. The difference is your drop. This test finds problems no other test reveals — it's how you discover the wire quietly heating inside a wall.
3. Continuity — is this actually connected? The beep test. Confirms a fuse is good, a wire isn't broken, a switch actually switches. Do it de-energized.
4. DC current (clamp meter) — what's actually being consumed. Reads current without breaking the circuit. Clamp the main negative and you see total draw, hunt phantom loads one fuse at a time, and verify your controller's real output.
