Build log: what the whole thing cost

Numbers, not vibes. Here's how an off-grid rig budget actually breaks down, and where the money goes that people don't expect.

Roughly in order of spend:

Battery bank — usually the single largest line. This is where "buy once" genuinely applies.

Solar array + mounting — panels have gotten cheap; mounting hardware, cable, and roof penetrations add more than people budget.

Inverter/charger + controller — pure sine, correctly sized, with surge headroom.

Wiring, fusing, bus bars, lugs — the category everyone underestimates. Heavy copper is expensive and you need more than you think. On a 12V system this can rival the cost of a battery. It's also where cutting corners causes fires.

Climate — AC and/or heat. A soft starter is a small cost that changes what the rest must support.

Water — pump, tanks, filtration, accumulator, fittings. Lots of small costs that total more than expected.

Safety — alarms, extinguishers, first aid. Smallest line, highest consequence.
