Your first-aid kit is built for paper cuts

Standard drugstore kits are designed for an office ten minutes from an ambulance. Off-grid, you may be the only care available for hours.

What actually belongs in it:

Serious bleeding control — a commercial tourniquet (CAT or SOFTT-W), hemostatic gauze, pressure bandage, trauma shears. The category most likely to save a life and the one most often missing entirely.

Wound care — an irrigation syringe matters more than ointment. Thorough irrigation with clean water prevents more infections than any cream.

Burns — burn gel dressings. Cooking and hot-work burns are extremely common in tight spaces.

Splinting — a rolled aluminum/foam splint and elastic wrap.

Medications — pain relief, antihistamine (allergic reactions escalate fast far from help), anti-diarrheal, electrolytes, and a full supply of anything anyone takes regularly.

Personal prescriptions and epinephrine if anyone has severe allergies. Check expiry on a schedule.
