GMRS or ham — which license?

Radio is the comms layer that needs no infrastructure at all — no towers, no satellites, no subscription. Two realistic paths in the US.

GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service) - One license, whole family, no test - Valid for years, single fee - Handhelds and mobiles are inexpensive and genuinely capable - Repeaters exist and extend range considerably - The right starting point for almost everyone

Amateur (ham) radio - Requires passing an exam — the entry-level Technician test is an achievable weekend of study - Far more spectrum, higher power, and HF bands capable of crossing continents with no infrastructure - Much larger equipment ecosystem and an active, helpful community

The advice: get GMRS now because it's immediate and useful. Study for Technician when you want the deeper capability. Not mutually exclusive.
